About animal sounds
Animal sounds are the calls people look up by name: a dog barking, a rooster at dawn, an owl after dark. This category sorts them by animal. Well-known animals such as dogs, cows, horses, lions and owls have their own pages, and smaller groups like water birds, deer, big cats and bears are listed here as well. Further down are single calls from dozens of other species, from hippo and koala to kookaburra and zebra.
Most clips are one call or a short phrase, a few seconds long, so they drop straight onto a timeline. Many animals come in more than one version: an adult and a young animal (a lion and a lion cub, a cow and a calf), or a close call and a distant one. Use a close call when the animal is on screen and a distant one to set a scene behind dialogue.
For games, cartoons and children's apps, look for the Stylized versions, such as the chiptune meow, the synth lion roar or the eight-bit bleat. The Natural calls suit nature videos, lessons and classroom quizzes.
Treat the species names as a guide to the character of a call, not as a reference for identifying wildlife.
