About impact & whoosh

This category is about movement and contact: something swings through the air, lands, slides or gets struck. Footsteps come on many surfaces, including gravel, snow, leaf litter, cobbles and metal grates, plus a separate set of running steps. Whooshes carry the air of a blade, a flag or a tablecloth moving past, and swings and throws add swords, spears, staffs, baseballs and bats.

On the contact side you'll find scrapes and drags (steel, chains, crates, glass), earth and rock such as gravel rolls, mud and rockslides, knocks on many kinds of wood, glass clinks, cracking ice, and a few heavier hits, punches and gunshots.

Choose by weight and timing. A clip with one sharp peak in its waveform reads as a hit; a slow rise and fall reads as something passing or settling. For footsteps, match the surface to the floor on screen and repeat a clip for a longer walk. In a fight or an action cut, place a whoosh just before the impact so the hit lands on the frame where contact happens.

The thuds and punches here are Stylized: tighter and punchier than real contact, which helps them read in games and motion graphics.
