About footsteps sound effects
Every footstep is two sounds close together: the heel landing, then the sole rolling or scuffing forward. The surface decides most of the character. Gravel and snow crunch, dry leaves crackle, wood knocks and sometimes creaks, metal rings, and carpet swallows almost everything. Footwear adds the rest: hard heels click, rubber soles squeak or thud, bare feet slap and pad.
English has a verb for every gait: tread, stomp, clomp, shuffle, tiptoe, trudge, and pitter-patter for small, quick feet. In film, footsteps are usually redone after shooting by Foley artists walking on prepared surfaces, and clean, isolated steps like these are meant to fill the same role.

Which one to pick
Choose the surface, then the walker. Outdoors on loose ground: Gravel Boots, Snow Crunch, Leaf Litter, Park Leaves, Scree Descent, Dune Walk. Wet: Wet Sneakers, Mud Trudge, Rubber Wellies, Shallow Wade, Creek Crossing, Wet Tile Slap. Indoors on wood, Heavy Walker, Wooden Staircase, Ballet Slippers and Sock Slide each move very differently, while Hall Carpet, Plush Carpet Slippers and Tatami Steps stay soft. Metal and industry: Metal Grate, Steel Deck, Iron Stairs, Catwalk, Metal Walkway Boots.
For character, Tiptoe Wood, Quiet Creep and Hushed Carpet are stealthy, Dragging Feet and Careful Shuffle are tired or slow, Track Spikes and Deck Pound are running, and Gravel Lane March and Measured Courtyard Steps keep a steady beat. Heeled Cobble, Cowboy Boots, Clog Walk and Ski Boots are the distinctive shoes. Each one approaches, passes and fades rather than looping, so chain a few for a long walk.
Uses
Horror scenes, where Wooden Staircase or Corridor Steps tells the audience someone is coming. Game characters whose steps change with the ground under them. Audiobooks, radio plays and podcasts that need movement between lines. Escape rooms and stage cues for an unseen visitor.
