About UI sound effects

UI sounds are the small cues that tell someone something happened: a message arrived, a step was completed, a panel slid open. The two largest groups are notification tones and transition sweeps. Notifications are single pings and chimes struck on glass, metal and ceramic, plus Duo versions with two notes in a row that read like a message alert. Transition sweeps are rising and falling synth tones for slides, menus, window changes and loading bars, named after the gesture they suit, such as Tab Switch Slide or Window Minimize Drop.

The category also holds the sounds of paper and soft materials: pages, tape, foil, cellophane, leather and fabric, handy for unboxing clips, stop motion and animations that move like paper. Confirm and error tones, keyboard typing and toggle switches round it out.

For interface work, shorter is usually better. Give frequent events, like a sent message, a short ping, and save longer swells for moments that happen once, like finishing a task. Before you ship a sound, play it ten times in a row: one that is charming once can wear thin by the tenth time. Soft glass tones sit comfortably under a tutorial voice, while bright metal ones cut through a busy video.
