About quiz buzzer sound effects

Quiz sounds come in pairs: a bright, rising tone that says right and a low or rough one that says wrong. Most of the meaning is carried by pitch direction and texture. Upward sweeps and clean bell tones read as success in most games and apps, while falling pitch and buzzing noise read as failure, which is why a TV game show buzzer is a harsh, sustained tone and not a melody. On an English-language game show a contestant buzzes in, the buzzer sounds when time runs out, and a correct answer gets a ding. Japanese quiz shows mark a correct answer with a two-note pinpon, the same word used for a doorbell.

Correct answers

Confirm Bright and Confirm Chime Long are single bell tones, the first quick and the second with a long tail. Confirm Rising, Confirm Sparkle and Confirm Flourish sweep upward, and the flourish is the most celebratory, close to a tiny fanfare.

Wrong answers

Error Harsh is a short, grating hit for an instant no. Error Descend slides down more slowly, which feels sadder and suits a near miss.

Buzzers

Sustained Buzz is the bright game show buzzer, Deep Buzz is lower and heavier, and Fadeout Buzz starts strong and dies away, good for time running out. Pick one buzzer and one confirm sound and keep them the same through the whole quiz.
