About siren sound effects

A siren is a tone built to be impossible to ignore: it climbs in pitch, holds near the top and sinks again, or flips between two notes. Mechanical sirens on poles and towers make that sound with a spinning rotor that chops a stream of air, so they need a moment to spin up and a long time to wind down. Electronic sirens can change pitch instantly, which is why they can step, yelp or alternate. A siren wails, blares, howls or sounds, and British children imitate the two-tone kind as nee-naw. Most of this set are outdoor warning sirens heard across open space, with the swell and the fade shaped by distance.

Which one to pick

Civil and outdoor

Plaza Siren, Hill Siren Rise, Harbor Siren Rise, Low Siren Lift and Rural Siren Swell climb slowly and fade, like a warning heard across town. Low Siren Lift and Plaza Siren carry the most weight.

Places with character

Metro Warning Rise is stiff and electronic, River Patrol Siren is thin and glassy, and Hush Siren Swell is filtered as if heard through a closed window, handy for a scene that stays indoors.

Distance

Distant Fade starts present and dies away, the right pick for something leaving or a threat that has passed.

Synth and stepped

Dual Tone Siren, Two Tone Siren, Triple Stepped Siren, Ascending Sweep, Retro Wail Rise and Deep Warning Drone are stylized, for games, sci-fi interfaces and tense music beds.
