About machine & vehicle sounds

Machine and vehicle sounds cover anything with a motor, a current or a hinge. On the road there are car engines from ignition to idle and revving, cars, trucks and motorcycles driving past, and trains and planes arriving, braking and flying over. Around the house and office you'll find motors and fans, appliances such as fridges, washers, dryers, blenders and vacuums, and the hum of transformers, ballasts and neon tubes. Electricity has a large set of its own, from faint static to heavy arcs, and doors, gates, hatches, windows, cabinets and garage doors cover things that open and close.

Many appliance sounds come as a matched set named Low, Idle, Heavy, Open, Enclosed and Distant. Low, Idle and Heavy describe how hard the machine is working. Open, Enclosed and Distant describe the space around it: an open room, inside a closed cabinet, or across a large hall. Pick from one set when the same machine has to change state in a scene.

Pass-by sounds rise and fall as the vehicle approaches and leaves, so line up the loudest moment with the frame where it crosses. Steady motor hums and engine idles can be repeated under a longer shot. For a door, decide whether you need the whole open-and-close movement or only the slam or the lock.
