About train sound effects

A train sounds like the heavy, rolling rumble of steel wheels on steel rail, with a diesel engine or electric motors on top. Jointed track adds the rhythmic clickety-clack people link with trains; modern welded rail gives a smoother roar. As a train passes, the sound swells, peaks and falls away, and a horn or motor drops in pitch as it goes by.

Inside a carriage you hear a steady drone instead, shaped by where you sit: more wind noise at the front, more wheel rumble at the back. Children call a train a choo-choo, after the puff and whistle of steam engines, and English verbs for the rest include rumble, rattle, clatter, screech and whistle.

Which one to pick

Passing by

Passenger Train Pass, Commuter Rail Pass, Train Approach and Steam Train Pass swell up and fade, ideal for a train crossing the frame. Bullet Train Whoosh and High Speed Rail Rush are faster and airier, and Freight Train Far stays distant for night scenes.

On board

Quiet Carriage, Half Empty Carriage and Window Rail Roll are steady interior beds for a long ride; Front Carriage Drone has more wind and Last Carriage Hum more wheels.

Underground

Metro Hum, Metro Wheels, Late Metro and Subway Tunnel Roar keep the tunnel walls close around you.

Trams and light rail

Street Tram Hum, Vintage Tram Roll, Light Rail Glide, Monorail Overhead and Maglev Hum are lighter and more electric.

Single moments

Train Horn is a long, mournful horn far away, Train Brake a high metal screech as a train stops, and Locomotive Starting Up a diesel engine coming to life.
