About crowd ambience sound effects
A crowd sounds like many conversations melting into one textured murmur. You catch the rise and fall of voices and the odd laugh, but no words you could follow. The space shapes it more than the head count: marble halls and glass atriums turn the murmur into a bright wash, carpeted rooms keep it close and dry, and an open square lets it thin out into the air.
In film and TV this background chatter is called walla, and British actors traditionally made it by repeating the word rhubarb. In everyday English it is a murmur, a buzz or a hubbub. Cheering, chanting and applause are different sounds with pages of their own.

Which one to pick
Big, reflective spaces
Expo Center, Lofty Hall, Opera Foyer, Museum Gallery and Bank Lobby Crowd ring off stone, marble or metal.
Small and dry
Lounge Hush, Clinic Waiting and Hostel Lounge are a handful of people in a soft room.
Outdoors
Festival Field, Picnic Lawn, Tourist Square and Night Market let voices spread into open air, and Field Crowd and Ballpark Bed are stadium beds without chanting.
Through a wall
Far Mall, Lunch Crowd Far and Far Reception sound like a crowd in the next room.
Extra layers
Pub Bed blends in glassware, Kitchen Bar has steam, Fountain Plaza running water and Bus Interchange an idling engine.
Reactions
Disappointed Murmur, Student Murmur, Conference Murmur and Interval Murmur are short swells of a let-down crowd, and Courtroom Murmur is astonishment. These mark a moment rather than fill a scene.
