About forest sound effects

A forest mostly sounds like moving air and moving water. Wind in the treetops makes a soft, rushing hush that swells and settles, leaves add a dry rustle, and now and then a branch creaks. Pines and broadleaf trees differ: needles break the wind into a fine, airy hiss, while broad leaves give a fuller, papery sound.

After rain the canopy keeps dripping long after the shower ends, and a stream adds a running, bubbling layer near the ground. English speakers talk about rustling leaves, whispering pines and a babbling brook. Birdsong is not part of these clips, so you can add your own or leave the woods quiet.

Which one to pick

Broadleaf or pine

the five Broadleaf Crown clips have the fuller, softer rustle and the five Pine Canopy clips the thinner, airier hiss. Within each series the clips differ mainly in strength. Pine Canopy Strong and Pine Canopy River Valley are the strongest pines, Pine Canopy Highland the lightest, so audition two or three.

Up close

Wind Rustling Leaves is the nearest and most detailed, with occasional branch creaks. Rain Dripping Canopy swaps wind for water falling off leaves.

Water

Forest Stream Flowing is the only clip with water on the ground, bubbling over stones. Layer it under a Pine Canopy clip for a fuller walk through the woods.
