About ocean waves sound effects

Ocean waves sound like a slow cycle of build, break and pull back. A breaking wave starts as a rising rush, peaks in a crash of white water, then drains away with a hiss of foam and a rattle of sand or pebbles. On a calm beach, small waves only lap: a soft slap and wash, over and over.

English calls the big ones crashing, pounding or breaking waves and the small ones lapping. Rocky shores sound busier than sandy ones because the water strikes many surfaces at once. Below the surface the same sea turns into a dull, pressing rumble with bubbles streaming past.

Which one to pick

Crashing Waves is the only clip built around one event: a wave gathers, breaks loud and pulls back. Use it on a cut, or wherever a wave has to land on a precise beat.

Lapping Waves and Reef Foam Wash are the calm, continuous ones. Lapping Waves is a gentle beach; Reef Foam Wash is a shallow, foamy wash over a reef, with more texture and no single crash.

Harbor Quay Chop and Distant Beach Boats move to the harbor. Harbor Quay Chop is light chop against a quay, heard from a pier. Distant Beach Boats layers far-off boat engines over the water, so pick it only when boats belong in the picture.

Underwater Beach Muffled is the odd one out: the sea from below the surface, muffled and full of bubbles, for diving shots and underwater levels.
