About fire sound effects
Fire sounds like three layers at once: a soft roar of hot air rising, a hiss where gas or sap burns, and sharp crackles and pops as wood splits and trapped moisture bursts. A wood fire leans on the crackle, while a gas flame is nearly all roar and hiss with no pops at all.
When something catches, the flame grabs air with a quick whoosh, which is why ignition sounds are so handy in editing. English has plenty of verbs here: fire crackles, pops, hisses, roars, flares up and dies down. Big fires get lower and heavier, a rumble you feel more than hear, whereas a sparkler or a burning magnesium strip is thin and fizzy.

Which one to pick
Catching light
the largest group is ignition, a flame that swells and fades. Blue Flame, Camp Stove, Oven Whump, Pan Flame and Blowtorch Start are kitchen and workshop burners; Gasoline Vapor and Alcohol Pool flash across a liquid.
Big fires
Bonfire Lift, Evening Bonfire, Building Blaze, Wildfire Surge and Pine Forest Fire are slow, deep swells for wide shots and disaster scenes.
Crackle
Campfire, Glowing Embers and Slow Smoldering are steady beds of pops rather than one swell. Start here for a fire burning behind a scene.
Sparks
Sparkler Fizz, Spark Shower, Magnesium Ribbon and Thermite Burn are bright and fizzy, closer to a hiss than a roar.
Game style
Arcade Fireball and Chiptune Blaze are retro synth; Magic Flame, Spell Fire and Phoenix Rise shimmer like a cast spell.
Uses
- GamesArcade Fireball for a retro projectile, Spell Fire for a fantasy attack, Flame Bloom when the player lights a torch.
- Video editingAn ignition swell makes a natural transition, and Campfire sits well under a night scene outdoors.
- Cooking channelsPan Flame or Oven Whump at the moment a burner comes on.
- Science lessonsMagnesium Ribbon and Thermite Burn next to a slide about combustion, with the real demo left to the lab.
