About thunder & storm sound effects

Thunder sounds like a deep, rolling rumble that can go on for several seconds, drifting as it echoes between clouds and the ground. Near a lightning strike you first hear a sharp crack or clap. Farther off, the crack is lost and only the low roll reaches you, which is why distant storms feel more like a mood than an event.

In English, thunder rumbles, rolls, booms or crashes, and a close strike cracks. A whole thunderstorm is more than thunder, though: gusts, rain, and the way trees and buildings answer the wind. This set leans toward the distant, rolling side of a storm and leaves out the sharp thunderclap, so it sits under a scene as weather rather than as a jump scare.

Which one to pick

Pure rumble

Long Thunder Roar, Thunder Bed, Low Rumble, Deep Storm Bass and Storm Cloud Roar are almost all low end. Low Rumble has the heaviest sub-bass and a room around it, as if heard indoors; Long Thunder Roar reads most clearly as thunder.

Storms with a place

Far City Storm, Thunder Over Sea and Night Harbor Storm tell the listener where the storm is, and Cabin Thunder Rumble is heard through wooden walls, handy for interiors.

Storm wind

Lighthouse Storm, Mountain Pass Wind, Plain Storm Wind and Pine Hill Storm are mostly wind with no thunder, and Storm Surf Roll mixes typhoon wind with surf. Reach for these when the storm should feel wild rather than loud.

Rain

Tent Roof Storm is the only one built on rain, a steady wash on canvas overhead.
