About gunshot sound effects

A gunshot is mostly one event: the muzzle blast, a sudden pressure wave with an almost instant attack. What follows depends on the weapon and the space. A high-powered rifle adds a second, sharper crack because the bullet outruns the speed of sound. A shotgun sounds deeper and broader. Indoors, hard walls throw back a slapback echo a fraction of a second later.

English writes it as bang or pow, and calls it a shot, a crack or a report; several in quick succession are a burst or a volley. In films, gunshots are designed sounds layered for impact, so a short, dry shot is a starting point you can build on.

Which one to pick

Each of the five is a different situation rather than a length variation. Pistol Shot is dry and close, the neutral choice. Indoor Echo is the same kind of handgun in a concrete hall, with the slapback that places it in a corridor or a garage. Rifle Crack is tighter and sharper, set in a small room. Shotgun Blast is the low, heavy boom, out in an open field with no echo tail. Retro Shot is an 8-bit square-wave burst for pixel art games.

All are single shots with no reload or shell casing, so for rapid fire, place copies close together and vary the volume slightly.

Uses

A starting pistol moment in a sports day or race video. Indie game prototypes, with Retro Shot for pixel shooters and Pistol Shot for a first pass at realistic weapons. Student films and stage plays that need an offstage shot cue. Western and detective scenes in audio dramas.
