About crickets sound effects

A cricket's chirp is not a voice. A male rubs a row of tiny teeth on one wing against a hard edge on the other, and the wing itself acts as a small soundboard, a method called stridulation. That is why the sound is so even and metallic: the same pulse, repeated at a steady rate. On warm nights the rate speeds up, and as the air cools it slows down. English says crickets chirp or chirr. Japanese gives each species its own sound, such as the riin riin of the bell cricket. Heard together, a field of crickets blurs into a shimmering wash that many people connect with summer nights. A single chirp in total silence has become the stock joke for a punchline that got no reaction.

Which one to pick

Single insects

One Chirp is one clean pulse and the shortest file in the set; Ascending Trill climbs in pitch and fades. These are the ones for comic timing.

Open country

Cricket Chorus, Field Crickets, Meadow Crickets, Wheat Field Night, Pasture Crickets, Thin Cricket Line and Highland Cricket Hum are wide and steady from start to finish, made to sit under a night scene.

Near houses and paths

Garden Crickets, Lawn Cricket Drone, Farmhouse Crickets, Hedgerow Crickets and Railway Verge Crickets suggest a home or a path close by.

Enclosed and low

Attic Cricket Drone sounds boxed in under a wooden roof and Hollow Cricket Drone is held in a hillside hollow. Low Hum and Mole Cricket Drone sit deepest; mole crickets call from burrows.

Cooler nights

Autumn Crickets, Cold Night Crickets and Mild Winter Crickets are thinner and fainter than the summer fields. Katydid Canopy adds a cricket relative singing from the treetops.
