About dog barking sound effects

A bark is a short, explosive burst, and its pitch says a lot about the size of the dog behind it. A large dog barks low and round, the sound English writes as woof. A small dog gives a thin, high yap, and children's books add arf and bow-wow. Barks that repeat and grow more intense are the classic warning at the front door. Puppies have a different vocabulary: a sharp yelp when something startles or hurts them, and a whine that climbs when they want attention. A howl is something else again, a long, sustained call that slides up through its pitch and fades, much closer to a wolf than to a bark.

Which one to pick

Single barks

Large Breed Woof is deep and round, Small Dog Yap high and clipped. Use either as a one-shot reaction, a notification or a cut point.

Puppy sounds

Single Yelp is a quick, sharp cry. Rising Whine is the longest file in the set, a thin whine that grows from quiet to loud, right for a pleading moment.

Building and sustained

Alert Bark ramps up before it stops, which suits a knock at the door. Dog Howl rises and fades like a call heard across a yard at night.

Cartoon

Cartoon Yelp is the only synthesized sound and by far the shortest, a clean tone with no tail for games and interface sounds.
