About cow sound effects

Moo is one of the first animal words English speakers learn, but the farm has older verbs for it. Cattle low, a steady, mournful call. Bulls bellow, a louder and rougher sound from deep in the chest. Calves bawl when they want their mother. Studies of mother cows and calves describe two kinds of call: a quiet, closed-mouth one used when the calf is close, and a louder open-mouth call when they are apart. Age and size change the voice a lot. A heifer, a young cow that has not calved, sounds lighter and softer than a mature cow, while a bull or a working ox is heavier and lower.

Which one to pick

Everyday moos

Long Rising Moo, Cow Lowing and Steady Lowing are the classic cow nearby; Steady Lowing holds an even level under a farm scene.

Far away

Distant Field Moo and Far Cattle Call drift in from across open land. They set a rural location without a visible herd.

Heavy voices

Big Bull Bellow and Bull Bellow are loud and rough, and Ox Groan sinks at the end like a tired working animal. Use these for a rodeo or a bull about to charge.

Young and quiet

Calf Bawl is high and plaintive, Heifer Call is soft and drawn out, and Tired Quiet Lowing sounds small and close, as if inside a shed.

Electronic

Synth Moo Swell is the only synthesized one, with a wobbling vibrato that suits cartoons, games and comic timing.
