About monkey sound effects

Monkey is a loose word in everyday English, and this set uses it the same way. Strictly speaking, gorillas, orangutans, gibbons and bonobos are apes, and lemurs belong to yet another branch of the primates, but people looking for monkey sounds usually want the whole jungle chorus. The voices differ enormously. Howler monkeys make a deep, roaring call that reaches far through the forest, while marmosets use thin, high whistles. Gibbons sing loud, whooping phrases, often as a duet between a mated pair, and adult male orangutans give a deep, booming long call. Cartoons write monkeys as ook ook or eek eek, but real primates rarely sound like either.

Which one to pick

Big and loud

Howler Monkey, Troop Calls and Gorilla Roar are deep and powerful. Troop Calls layers several howlers at once, so it can fill a scene on its own.

Movement and distance

Approaching Troop builds from quiet to loud as a group comes closer, and Distant Howl stays far off. Use the first for a reveal and the second for atmosphere.

Sharp and sudden

Monkey Shriek and Baboon Bark are abrupt and rough, good as a startle or a comic interruption.

High and gentle

Marmoset Call, Bonobo Peep and Lemur Wail are thin and high. Gibbon Song and Orangutan Call sit in between, more musical than threatening.
