About owl sound effects
Most people picture an owl as a soft, low hoot, a round sound with almost no attack. The famous British tu-whit tu-whoo is really two tawny owls: a sharp ke-wick from the female answered by the male's long, wavering hoot. Not every owl hoots. Barn owls give a harsh, hissing shriek instead, which can sound alarming in the dark. In film and radio, a distant hoot is the quickest way to tell an audience that it is night. Many people search for owl sounds to name a bird they heard outside. For that job, a field guide or a birding app is the better tool.

Which one to pick
Close hoots
Tawny Hoot is a steady low note, Short Hoot is a single clipped one, and Owl Hoot swells smoothly and fades. These sit cleanly on top of dialogue or music.
Far away
Distant Hoot grows from faint to clear, and Distant Owl drifts across a dark valley. Both set a night scene without drawing attention.
Shrieks
Barn Owl Shriek is close and harsh, and Distant Barn Owl is the same kind of call from farther off. Choose these for horror and suspense rather than a cozy night.
Not realistic
Synth Hoot is an electronic tone with a ringing tail, and Cartoon Owl Hoot is rounded and warm, good for games, children's content and app sounds.
