About crowd cheering sound effects

Cheering is voices, not hands. Thousands of people shouting open vowels at once merge into a roar with a bright top and a heavy low end, and the shape follows the moment: a goal or a touchdown spikes almost instantly, while an encore call builds as more of the room joins in. Smaller groups sound looser, with single whoops and laughs poking out.

English describes it with cheer, roar, whoop and holler, and the classic written shouts are hooray and hurrah. Real crowds rarely cheer cleanly. Whistles, clapping and the odd groan are part of what makes a crowd believable.

Which one to pick

Sports scenes have the most choice. Stadium Goal Roar, Touchdown Surge, Late Goal Cheer, Arena Tip-Off, Arena Pop and Wave Cheer are big and punchy, while Gymnasium Cheer, Bowling Strike Cheer and Rink Skater Cheer are smaller venues. For shows, Curtain Cheer, Encore Cheer and Cinema Hooray carry a theater's warmth. Pub Cheer, Village Hooray, Toast Cheer, Party Cheer and Tight Room Cheer sound like a few dozen people in one room, the last one bone dry. Outdoors and further away, try Distant Stadium Cheer, Festival Yell, Marathon Finish, Campus Rally Cheer or Arrivals Cheer.

Mixed Cheer blends shouting with clapping, and Piercing Cheer is the high, screaming end of excitement. A few entries are not cheers at all: Stadium Moan is a low groan of disappointment, Cinema Hiss and Hall Hiss are hissing and booing, and Stadium Hum is fans humming before kickoff.

Uses

Sports highlight reels. A win screen or high score moment in a game. Livestream alerts for a new follower or a reached goal. Wedding and party videos, where Toast Cheer fits the room better than a stadium roar.
