About crowd booing sound effects

Booing is one long vowel held by many people at once, a low booo that swells as more of the crowd joins and drops away when they run out of breath. Because everyone sustains the same oo sound, a booing crowd is darker and more droning than a cheering one, with jeers, groans and the odd whistle riding on top.

English uses boo as the noun, the verb and the shout itself, with jeer and heckle for the meaner, wordier versions. In Britain, booing the villain is part of the fun at a pantomime, so not every boo is angry. The same word is also the playful shout used to startle someone; this page is about crowds.

Which one to pick

Size and setting do most of the work. Stadium Boo, Arena Jeer, Bleacher Boo and Festival Boo are big crowds in open space. Council Room Boo, Convention Boo and Gym Boo are rooms with walls you can hear, Council Room Boo being a few dozen residents rather than thousands. Far Jeer and Street Boo come from a distance, and Market Boo is a crowd of shoppers indoors.

Mood varies too. Mocking Boo has a taunting, half-laughing edge, Bar Groan is more disappointment than anger, Theater Boo is the good-natured pantomime kind, and Crescendo Boo keeps building, useful when the room turns against someone.

Uses

A referee's call or a missed penalty in sports edits. Game shows and quiz nights, as the sound for a terrible answer. Pantomimes and school plays, cueing the audience to boo the villain. Commentary videos reacting to a bad take. A lose screen in a party game.
