About monster sound effects
No one has heard a real troll, so monster sounds run on agreed rules. Lower and slower means bigger: a giant's groan crawls, a goblin's snarl is high, scratchy and quick. Wet, gurgling textures say slime or swamp, a long hiss says serpent, and metal resonance with servo whine says robot or golem. Film sound designers usually build these by layering animal growls, human voices and textures, then pitching them down.
In English the verb carries the mood: roar, growl, snarl, hiss, bellow, grunt, gurgle, shriek, and grr on the page. Every voice here is wordless, so it stays out of the way of dialogue.
How to write it in Korean
| Language | Sound | Verb |
|---|---|---|
| 한국어 | 으르렁, 어흥 | 으르렁거리다 |
Which one to pick
Sort by creature. Giants: Mountain Roar, Barrel-Chested Giant, Troll Rumble, Brute Groan and Old Giant Sigh, with Twin Throat and Hydra Heads stacking several throats at once. Small and nasty: Goblin Snarl, Shrill Goblin, Imp Screech, Kobold Hiss, Gremlin Throat. Slimes and blobs: Slime Surge, Gel Swell, Blob Sink, Jelly Maw. Sea monsters: Kraken Coil, Leviathan Depth, Abyss Moan, Pressure Groan. Golems and machines: Stone Golem, Mech Beast, Automaton Growl, Clockwork Growl, Steel Hydra, Titan Engine. Ghostly: Shade Hum, Spectral Stream, Icy Specter, Cave Moan.
For a pixel look, use Pixel Ogre, Arcade Slime, Pixel Ghost or Retro Kraken; for kids' animation, Cartoon Beast and Cartoon Giant. Almost all of them swell in and fade out rather than hitting at once, so for a jump scare, cut in at the loudest point. Titan Gasp is the one short burst.
Uses
Enemy idle and attack sounds in indie games and RPGs. Tabletop sessions, where a game master plays Mountain Roar as the party opens the door. Haunted house props and Halloween displays. Audio dramas and podcasts with a fantasy or horror setting. Kids' animation, where Cartoon Giant keeps a monster friendly.
